IAF

An Initial Approach Fix (IAF) is a designated point on an instrument approach procedure where the aircraft starts its descent from the en route phase to the approach phase. It is typically located along the extended centerline of the runway and marked with a navigational aid (NAVAID). The IAF provides a precise point where the pilot can begin the descent and establish the aircraft on the final approach course. Once the aircraft reaches the IAF, the pilot should be at the correct altitude, speed, and configuration for the approach. The IAF is an important element of instrument flight procedures, as it enables the pilot to transition safely from the en route phase to the approach phase.
