Lead radial

« Back to Glossary Index

Lead Radial: The starting point for initiating a turn from the DME arc to the inbound course is referred to as the lead radial. This is the radial at which a pilot begins to turn their aircraft towards the inbound course in order to join the final approach. The lead radial is determined based on the aircraft’s speed, altitude, and the distance from the DME arc. It is a critical factor in ensuring a safe and accurate approach, as turning too early or too late can lead to deviation from the desired flight path. Therefore, pilots must carefully calculate the lead radial and ensure that they follow it precisely during their approach.
