Lift over drag ratio

Lift-to-Drag Ratio

Lift-to-Drag Ratio (L/D Ratio) refers to the measurement of the amount of lift produced by an aircraft relative to the amount of drag experienced by the same aircraft at a specific airspeed. The L/D Ratio is an essential aerodynamic characteristic of an aircraft, as it determines the efficiency of the aircraft in staying in the air and covering distances horizontally. An experienced engineer typically expresses the L/D Ratio in terms of the Coefficients of Lift and Drag rather than the Lift and Drag equations themselves, as this more effectively communicates the relative ratios and efficiencies of the lift and drag forces at play. Understanding the Lift-to-Drag Ratio of an aircraft is a vital component of designing and optimizing aeronautical vehicles for maximum efficiency and performance.
