Definition of “Mandatory Altitude

A “Mandatory Altitude” is a specific altitude indicated on an instrument approach chart with the altitude value not only underscored but also overscored. Aircraft are compulsory to maintain a constant altitude at this designated value throughout the respective approach procedure. This fixed altitude is typically indicated during the final phases of an approach when the aircraft is expected to level out and maintain level flight until a predetermined point is reached. Failing to maintain this altitude can lead to a potential breach of airspace regulations or safety risks. Therefore, pilots must adhere to the “Mandatory Altitude” to ensure safe and efficient flight operations.
