Mandatory Block Altitude

A Mandatory Block Altitude is a specific altitude range indicated on an instrument approach chart that includes two underscored and overscored altitude values between which aircraft must maintain their altitude. This is typically used during a procedure where vertical separation cannot be guaranteed due to terrain or other obstacles. The purpose of a Mandatory Block Altitude is to ensure the safety of all aircraft in the area and prevent collisions by mandating that aircraft remain within a designated altitude range. Failure to maintain the Mandatory Block Altitude can result in serious consequences and could even be considered a violation of aviation regulations. Pilots are responsible for carefully studying all approach charts and complying with all mandatory altitude restrictions during their flights.
