Sidestick

« Back to Glossary Index

Side-stick, also known as sidestick controller, is a type of aircraft control stick that is positioned at the side of the cockpit, away from the traditional central position between the pilot and co-pilot seats. It enables the pilot to control the pitch and roll movements of the aircraft. The sidestick has become increasingly popular in modern aircrafts, particularly those manufactured by Airbus, and is seen as a more ergonomic and intuitive control mechanism compared to the traditional yoke or central stick. The sidestick is designed to provide seamless and precise control, allowing for smooth and responsive flying. Its compact design and absence of a large control column improve visibility and free up space in the cockpit. The sidestick controller is operated by hand and allows pilots to fly with one hand, thus enabling easy communication between the crew while flying. The sidestick is a crucial element in modern day aviation and has revolutionized the way pilots operate the aircraft.
