ST (Static Discharge Tip)

The ST or Static Discharge Tip is a device installed on aircrafts to reduce the buildup of static electricity and prevent sparking. It consists of a metal rod or wire protruding from the surface of the aircraft that is designed to provide a path for static electricity to discharge safely into the air. The ST is typically located on the trailing edges of an aircraft’s wings, tail, and other areas where static electricity buildup is most likely to occur. When static discharge occurs, it can produce a visible effect known as Elmo’s Fire, which is a corona discharge that appears as a glowing halo or flame-like shape around the tip of the ST. The use of STs is an important safety feature for aircraft, as the buildup of static electricity can pose a serious risk to the integrity of an aircraft’s electrical and avionic systems, as well as to passenger safety.
