Definition of “Useful Load

Useful load” refers to the maximum weight of useful items that an aircraft can carry while still maintaining a safe and efficient flight. This weight includes the combined weight of passengers, cargo, fuel, and other necessary items such as pilots and oil. The useful load is calculated by subtracting the basic empty weight of the aircraft from the maximum allowable gross weight. Generally, the useful load varies depending on the type and size of the aircraft and is an important consideration for pilots when planning their flight and determining the amount of weight that can be safely carried. It is important to note that the term “useful load” applies only to general aviation aircraft and differs from the payload capacity of larger commercial aircraft.
