Heavy

« Back to Glossary Index

Heavy” in aviation refers to larger aircraft that have a maximum takeoff weight of 136 tonnes or more. These aircraft require special procedures and equipment for ground handling, takeoff and landing due to their size and weight. They also require longer runways and more fuel to operate. Heavy aircraft are typically used for long-haul flights and cargo transport, and may include models such as the Boeing 747, Airbus A380, and Antonov An-124. Despite their challenges, heavy aircraft are important for global transportation and have revolutionized the way goods and people are moved across the skies.
