taxiway

« Back to Glossary Index

Taxiway is the designated strip of an airport surface used for taxiing aircraft, connecting runways with terminals, hangars, and other designated parking areas. It is a vital part of the airfield, designed to provide safe and efficient movement of aircraft on the ground. A taxiway serves as a route for arriving and departing planes, connecting them to the appropriate runway. Besides, it enables aircraft to move safely between the runway and the terminal, as well as between the terminal and the parking apron. Taxiways are marked with painted lines, signs, and lights, and are constructed to withstand the weight of aircraft and the expected traffic at the airport. The width and length of taxiways vary, depending on the size of the planes they serve and the estimated number of movements. They must comply with international standards and regulations, ensuring the safety and efficiency of airport operations.
